Serenity

An oil painting in the manner of John Singer Sargent: loose visible brushwork, even daylight, and a luminous white ground. The only style that keeps your pet in the pose from your photo — sitting, grinning, head tilted, exactly as you caught them.

About this Style

Sargent's Daylight

John Singer Sargent painted fast, in daylight, with a loaded brush and very little fuss — and the reason his portraits still feel alive is that you can see him doing it. The marks stay on the canvas. Serenity works the same way: fluid directional brushwork that follows the growth of the fur, rich glazes underneath, canvas texture showing through the paint, and no attempt to sand the surface down into something smooth and photographic.

The light is soft, even, neutral daylight with no warm cast and no glowing halo, which keeps every coat colour honest: a charcoal cat stays properly cool and dark, a white chest stays clean white. Behind the subject is a bright painterly white field, brushed rather than blank, suggesting a studio without describing one. And unlike the head-and-chest styles, Serenity paints your pet in the pose from your photograph — the open-mouthed grin, the ears at the angle they were, the way they were sitting. If what you love is a particular photo rather than a particular face, this is the style that keeps it.

Questions

About the Serenity portrait

Does Serenity keep my pet in the pose from my photo?
Yes, and it's the only style that does. The others are framed as a head-and-chest portrait in a set pose. Serenity paints your pet as they are in your photograph — sitting, lying down, mouth open in a grin, head at whatever angle you caught. Choose it when the photo itself is the thing you love.
Is Serenity a real painting or a filtered photo?
It's built as a painting from the start. Visible directional brushwork that follows the fur, layered glazes, canvas texture coming through the paint. Up close you see marks, not pixels. It's the closest of the styles to a commissioned Sargent portrait.
Will the white background work in my home?
It's the easiest of the styles to hang. The bright white field suits light walls, gallery walls, kitchens, and hallways where the dark-ground styles can feel heavy. It's also the one that photographs well in a bright room, since there's no dark field to catch reflections behind glass.
Is Serenity a good choice for a memorial portrait?
It can be — the bright, gentle register suits people who want to remember a pet at their happiest rather than in a solemn key. That said, Rainbow Bridge is the style we built specifically for pets who have passed. If you're unsure, start there.
What kind of photo do I need to send?
A clear, well-lit photo where your pet's face is the focus. Phone photos are fine. Avoid heavy filters, extreme back-lighting, or photos where the face is partly hidden. If your only good photo is imperfect, send it anyway — we work with what you have and will tell you if anything needs attention before we begin.
What sizes and formats can I order?
Digital download from $37, Fine Art Print on Hahnemühle German Etching paper from $114, or Gallery Wrapped Canvas from $268. Every print and canvas order also includes the digital file at no extra cost. Exact prices for each size are shown on the order page.
How long does it take?
Digital downloads are delivered in seconds — the preview you see at checkout is the file you receive. Physical orders (prints and canvases) are typically delivered in 5 to 8 working days, with up to 2 weeks during the holiday season.
What if I'm not happy with the result?
We'll work with you to fix it. Every portrait is checked by the studio before it ships, and we offer reprints for any quality issue and refunds where appropriate. The full policy is on our refund page.
